Road Ranger Services

Road Rangers play a crucial role in managing traffic incidents efficiently. They help to reduce congestion and enhance roadway safety. Road Rangers are trained personnel that assist in incident management, provide traffic updates to the RTMC, and clear road hazards. This service is vital for keeping our roads safe and well-maintained, making it essential for both motorists and the community.

Service patrol drivers are all in uniform, courteous, and most have or are in training for first aid and CPR. Each service patrol driver provides a comment card to every stranded motorist that is assisted, which can be mailed back to the Department. Since the program’s inception in the year 2000, the Road Rangers have made over 6.1 million service assists.

The Road Ranger Service Patrol is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation and its partners and is bid out to private contractors. For employment, contact your local contractor.

RISC:

Rapid Incident Scene Clearance (RISC) is a highly innovative program that supports Florida’s Open Roads Policy goal of safely clearing major highway incidents and truck crashes in 90 minutes or less.

Many times, during major commercial vehicle crashes, trailers loaded with cargo are damaged and spill their loads onto the highway or adjacent areas. The RISC contract requires the vendor to have specified extra equipment on hand or available 24 hours a day/7 days a week to respond to these major incidents. The towing company can receive an extra incentive for the staging and/or use of this extra equipment in the incident clearance process.

Examples of RISC classified events include large vehicle crashes, such as tractor trailers, box trucks, and boats that are overturned or damaged to the point where the vehicle cannot be towed by a smaller tow truck on the interstate

SafeTow:

District Five’s SafeTow program assists in promoting the State’s Open Roads Policy and provides vehicle removal services to motorists who are obstructing traffic on State Roads. This program provides safety for both the motorists impeding traffic as well as the motoring public. SafetTow is authorized by the Department on a case-by-case basis and does not reduce or eliminate owner responsibility in removing their vehicle from the roadway.
